Research proposed

Constantin Brancusi stated that “the problem was no longer that of integrating sculpture into architecture, as in the great synthesis of antiquity and the middle ages. On the contrary, a work of architecture should become a kind of inhabited sculpture” (Read, 1964, p.191). As Brancusi proposed this view, a further characteristic of modern architecture was established.

Representing space is a legitimate pursuit for any artist. Within the logical definition of sculpture, a solid material is usually carved or moulded to represent an integral mass in space, such as occupying space. Then, it is totally legitimate to create volumes whose spatial confines have an expressive function, and that is precisely the function of architecture, which is an art of hollows (Read, 1964, pp.106-107). These evidences indicate a high correlation between sculpture and architecture. Enlightened from this view, I decided to look investigate that how sculpture is an influential part of life and has inspired architects. As the artistry of architecture is usually represented as sculptural appearance, this phenomenon will be the entry point of studying the mutual identity between architecture and sculpture in this report.

Broadly speaking, the thesis aims to define the similarities and differences between sculpture and sculpture. The research approach starts with the evolution of modern sculpture and architecture that influenced by different art movements. Meanwhile, the arguments about the difference between sculpture and architecture will be introduced. Then, with the deepening of the study, I diverted my attention on architecture in context. I tend to look at what extend it is acceptable on its appearance and whether it provides a good experience to users.

The secondary research included reading and investigation into existing materials, such as books, web sites, other academic papers. As this became clear I built on the research by carrying carried out secondary, the primary research draws upon my own experiences, visits to architecturally significant buildings and locations.  My primary research consists of case studies where I carry out more detailed research through visiting buildings that have a lot of controversies about their shape and form, observing their surrounding and interviewing with those that visit, work within them or live around them.

At the end of this research, I will sum up all information to support my final year project design.
